GIG SCHEDULE

Sunday 23 December 2012

R C Casino

T'was a rather snowy evening (ie 44cm) in Ottawa last night as we performed the Bobby Show. However, we got there and got home safely.  People loved the show! Friday night was dead (snow) and Saturday night was booming.

There's a major petition in progress, to save the horse racing and casino. (slots, whatever) All local politician's phone numbers are listed.

The next Bobby Show is Athens on Jan. 26.   That show is a re-run of a year ago, when the power went out during the 3rd song and the building had to be evacuated.  We should have better luck this time around.

People I've played with!

Tim in a warmer place.
I was reading somebody's web site, and the artist did some 'name dropping'.   So, I thought I should do that, myself.  I'll try to do this… from the beginning.
~1967 - one of my first jobs ever, I playing in London, Ontario, with 'The Trendsetters' and we were hired to back up Bobby Vee an the old London Arena. We rehearsed with him in the afternoon, and performed in the evening for 3000.   The Trendsetters were the warm up act for The Turtles and Question Mark and the Mysterions, that year.
~1968 - on the CTV 'It's Happening Show' with Robbie Lane.  We pre-recorded all the band tracks. Robbie and guest singers, sang live to our tracks and we faked it! (that is how a sax player dances and sings at the same time) However, in this show , I was on stage with Robbie,  Eddie Floyd, Andy Kim, Grant Smith (minus The Power), Diane Brooks,  Rhonda Silver. The latter 2 were regular Toronto session singers.    There were other guests. Robbie still performs with a version of 'The Disciples' regularly in Toronto.
In the fall of 1968, I performed in the 'Orange Tangerine' with my first cousin (Kitchener) Paul Stouffer.  Paul (the guitar player) has gone on to become a renowned Canadian jazz pianist
~In 1969,  I moved to Kingston and the pace is a bit slower.

The University Club at Queens

The University Club, viewed from 'the lake'.
Recently I played at The University Club at Queen's (formerly the Faculty Club). It is a beautiful old building on the Queen's campus, modernized within - but maintaining it's historic charm. I will be there for brunch on Mother's day, and Father's day, in 2013.

                        The University Club, Christmas brunch.
Here I am seen performing on my Roland E50, which I acquired from a well known, clever Kingston man, Cam Inglis.   Stay tuned for a post on the subject of 'Cam Inglis'.

Eastview

Hallman+Hoffman, Eastview Legion.
Great weekend at Eastview (Ottawa,Vanier) Legion. Hallman+Hoffman played Saturday night, Sunday afternoon 4-8.  Both were quite well attended. Sunday had a great meal, and there were some amazing dancers!  The place is quite 'French' and I enjoy playing in that environment. They know how to have a good time! It's just a slightly different atmosphere than I'm used to.
Update Dec.2012  We are playing monthly in 2013 at Eastview - see the schedule.

39 Club

Michael Myers and I had a great 'gig' at the Kingston 39 Club last night, at the RCL 631, Collin's Bay.
For those who are unaware,  it's a social - dance 'club' that's been in existence for at least 60 years. Michael and I play at the club roughly every 6 weeks - but not quite 'regularly'.
We play a mix of old country and old 'pop' (Neil Sedaka, ElvisJim Reeves, Texas Tornados). There are very popular bands at the club who just play country music, so we're rather known as the 'pop' types - the 'rockers' - which appeals to some, and not others (but enough to fill the place last night).  In this wacky world,  there aren't many pure dances left where an adult can go, so it's a great spot for us.
We play three, one-hour sets with two, 15 minute breaks.  So....it's 8-9, 9:15-10:15, and 10:30-11:30.  There's one 'meet new friends'-type dance every set, and a snack at the end.
Update Dec.15.  A wonderful sold out Christmas dance last night. Thanks to the many volunteers who decorated the hall, and organized the evening. (see schedule for upcoming dates)

Belleville Fish and Game

Hallman+Hoffman @ Belleville Fish and Game Club.
Hallman+Hoffman had a great afternoon, Sunday, at Belleville Fish and Game Club. We snagged them...hook, line, and sinker. Seriously, it was Dan Brady's 80th,  and it was a dancing crowd - from 1:15- 4pm. A good time was had by all, and there was a magnificent pot luck supper afterwards!
Many members of the Belleville 39er Club were in attendance.
Update March 25  'Hallman + Hoffman' will be at the 39 Fish and Game Club, Friday April 5, June 28, and Oct. 18, 2013.

Nov 3, 2012

Tim and Canada's own Doug Gravelle
Saturday, Nov. 3, is a busy day. I'll start out at the Trenton Legion (from 1-5). Normally it's 2-6, but Penny has graciously cooperated and let me do 1-5 so I can hit a wedding for Lloyd and Joyce in Smith's Fall's at 7:45ish.  There, I will be joined by drummer Doug Gravelle, and Brockville's Terry Hoffman on guitar.
Lloyd is a fiddler, and he will perform with his group in our first break.   How's that for 'better than a DJ during a band break'?
Oh, by the way, I haven't played at the Civitan Club since about 1973.
Update:  The wedding was great, and they're hitched. Lloyd's high school band was magnificent!

Friday night Nov. 9, Gan Legion.

Tim Hallman with Mary Jo Maur, summer 2011
On Friday night, Nov. 9,  Mary Jo Maur and I will be performing for a (chicken) dinner-show-dance at the Gananoque Legion. The 'show' part, will be 'performing the Vera Lynn and other wartime favourites.'  (though people have been known to dance to Vera Lynn music).  Cocktails are at 5, dinner at 6, Mary Jo and I at 7 - 10ish. For tickets/info,  drop by the Legion or call 613-382-3023.
update:  The night was a sold out big success.  Many thanks to all the volunteers who worked the night (in particular the male teenage cadet waiters).  As usual, the Legion manageress, Ms. DeWolfe did a super job of decorating and organizing!  Let's do it again next year!!

Walnut Grove Dance Video

Here is an old video of a dance in Walnut Grove that I thought was worth posting. My first video on my new blog.

First Post - Collin's Bay Legion

Hallman+Hoffman (r to l)
 This is my first post.
I will be at the Collins Bay Legion on Saturday afternoon from 2-6 pm with the great Terry Hoffman. This is an Octoberfest event with great music and food! Should be a blast!
Terry hails from Brockville and is a wicked (but tasteful) guitar player. Few guitarists can do what he does!   Good singer too!   We'll be playing old Country and Pop and Polkas and Waltzes. We hope you'll all come out to see us.
update:  'Twas a great afternoon, and thanks for many friends who
attended!  There were a lot of people I hadn't seen in a long time.
update Dec.12...   Hallman+Hoffman will be at RCL 631, Feb 2, May 4, 2013 (2-6pm)
